DETAILS ON THE PARTICIPANTS
Bjarke Ingels
Bjarke Ingels is the founder of Copenhagen-based architectural group BIG. His Architecture emerges from the careful analysis of how life constantly evolves and changes. His architecture is a combination of exploring living, leisure and working, which collectively test the balance of programmatic mixtures on the triple bottom line. His work focuses on smaller details that exist within the “big picture”.
"We come under the impression that clash of opposites doesn't bother you. On the contrary, you like to compromise them."
www.big.dk
Lars Ramberg
Lars Ramberg is an international artist, born in Norway, today working and residing in Berlin. He has been part of a number of different exhibitions all over the world in addition to biennales in both Venice and Sao Paolo. Among recent work, the Zweifel installation, the Liberté and the newly won competition for the ventilation towers in Bjørvika, Oslo can be mentioned.
“..I am saying is that Scandinavia is on some levels missing pluralistic thinking. And I think pluralism is closely related to doubt…”

Jan Christiansen
Jan Christiansen is the City Architect in Copenhagen municipality. He is a former teacher and lecturer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and former owner of Domus Architects.
“In my opinion, the art of architecture is dependent on borders and a lot of compromises. Architecture is not a free form art. It is a kind of art where you have to make compromises on the genius loci, economy and everything else.”
CONDITIONS interview with Jan Christiansen

/// CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - ISSUE #4: PRODUCTION OF ADDED VALUE
24 December 2009
.....................................................................................................................................
The next issue of CONDITIONS will focus on possibilities to expand the ambitions beyond the given assignment. Is the architect reduced to a service provider or should they take on responsibility to secure the common good? In most countries citizens pay tax or VAT to contribute to society in general, healthcare, social services, education etc. It is a system taking care of and ensuring the welfare of the citizens. What is the VAT of architecture? Who is responsible for adding the extra? Why should architecture engage? What is the right or appropriate strategy to ensure the productions of common value within architecture?
We are looking for speculative, provocative texts as well as projects exploring the production of added value.
Send your abstracts to submission@conditionsmagazine.com within 12th of February. Deadline for final submissions is 10th of March.

baukuh produces architecture.Designs are independent of personal taste. No member of baukuh is ever individually responsible for any single project, each of which is the product of the office as a whole. Working without a hierarchical structure or a stylistic dogma, baukuh produces architecture out of a rational and explicit design process. This process is based on a critical understanding of the architecture of the past. The knowledge encoded in the architecture of the past is public, and starting from this public knowledge, any architectural problem can be solved. baukuh is currently composed of Paolo Carpi, Silvia Lupi, Vittorio Pizzigoni, Giacomo Summa, Pier Paolo Tamburelli and Andrea Zanderigo.

/// CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - ISSUE #3: GLAMOROUS COMPROMISE
14 October 2009
.....................................................................................................................................
With all the different actors needed to erect a building the architect always has to enter into a dialogue. The end result will be a compromise, whether you like it or not. A compromise is understood as a concept of finding agreement through communication, through a mutual acceptance of terms—often involving variations or aberration from an original goal or desire. Some architects may understand compromise as a capitulation, referring to a “surrender” of objectives, principles, or material, in the process of negotiating an agreement. Is “compromise” an agreement that no party is really satisfied with? Or is the compromise, in many cases, the most appropriate answer? An increasing number of young architects tend to compromise their beliefs, their health, their social life. Work long hours to endure in the so called world of architecture, where fame and media define who is going to be the next star architect. How much do you need to compromise in order to belong to this glamorous world? Glamour denotes luxury and elegance, creating an impression of attraction and fascination, an impression which is better than reality.
Deadline for abstracts is week 47. Deadline for final submissions is week 50.
